Tuesday saw return of the team that set a team record for wins and was favored to secure the franchise's first title.
It was a long slog, as slogs tend to be. The Suns fell behind early in the fifth meeting of the series with Dallas Tuesday night for some of the same reasons they lost Games 3 and 4 in the Western Conference semifinals.
The Suns put their disasters in Dallas behind them Tuesday by finding their touchstones: tenacious defense and efficient offense. They were nearly flawless in the third quarter, outscoring the Mavericks by 19 points on their way to a 110-80 victory and a 3-2 lead. So coach Monty Williams tinkered. He altered his rotation, removing struggling backup point guard Cam Payne for Landry Shamet. He adjusted defensive assignments, including putting forward Jae Crowder on point guard Luka Doncic more than any previous games. No question the Suns were fueled by the sellout crowd at Footprint Center, but they also were a team that played with an edginess, especially in that devastating third quarter.
