Star Trek: Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan urges fans to watch the show to help prevent its cancelation like what happened to Star Trek: Prodigy.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Star Trek: Lower Decks' long-term plan may not see its fruition, and the animated comedy could end with season 5, says Lower Decks' creator and executive producer Mike McMahan. Lower Decks is currently in the middle of season 4, and Lower Decks season 5 is in development for an expected summer 2024 release.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Mike McMahan was candid about why fans should not only watch Star Trek: Lower Decks when new episodes stream on Paramount+, but also recruit new fans to watch the series. McMahan warns of the signs at Paramount+ that Lower Decks' future - and his own long-term plans for the show - are not assured, given how Paramount+ canceled Star Trek: Prodigy and other Trek series ending.

If you love Lower Decks as much as I do, I would say make sure to watch it and get people to watch it now. A letter-writing campaign after a show gets canceled, it’s helpful, but what’s more helpful is campaigning to get more eyes on the show when it’s airing because it gives me the ability to push for more seasons. I would love to finish Lower Decks with the plan that I have for it.

I mean, listen, we’re in weird times. Everything is changing. I think everything’s gonna continue to change. I would say nothing is safe. I don’t have any bad news for anybody, but also, I think you shouldn’t assume that this stuff is gonna stick around unless you vocally and watch it early on. I do not know if we’re going to have another season after the season we’re working on right now [Season 5]. Lower Decks could very well be a five-season show.

In today's TV landscape, a 5 season show is a success, and that's how Star Trek: Lower Decks would be regarded if it does end. But Mike McMahan clearly has a larger plan in mind that he hopes to achieve. While the days when a Star Trek series was assured to air for 7 seasons ended with Star Trek: Voyager in 2001, fans can still actively support Lower Decks now to show Paramount+ it deserves to see Mike McMahan's full story told.
