The Whites were not at their free-flowing attacking best at Wembley as they lost 1-0 in the play-off final
For a side that scored 85 goals over the course of the Championship season and play-offs, Leeds United looked surprisngly toothless under the Wembley spotlight.
While the Whites missed No 9 Patrick Bamford's role at the spearhead of their attack, it was noticeable how few clear-cut chances they created, especially from wideman Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto. Both were withdrawn in the second half, with James and Jaidon Anthony taking up wider roles, hugging the touchline at times in a bid to open up the pitch.
It was a tactic the Saints employed successfully throughout the game, with Ryan Fraser keeping Gnonto quiet on the opposite flank. Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters, who ended suffered a clash of heads with James as the battle intesified, revealed it was something Russell Martin had drilled into them.
