Sean Dyche said he did not fill the Everton bench at Sheffield United with youngsters as he believed their development may have benefitted more from playing for the Under-21s
More academy players were not named on Everton’s bench at Sheffield United because of concerns their development was being stunted by fringe-work with the first team.
Dyche named just seven players on the bench for the trip to Sheffield United. That included two goalkeepers, the academy midfielder Tyler Onyango, and Dwight McNeil - who Dyche acknowledged was brought back from injury earlier than normal to help strengthen the squad. Injuries last week to Lewis Dobbin and Michael Keane compounded Dyche’s problems, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jack Harrison, Dele and Seamus Coleman also unavailable as they recover from fitness issues. Demarai Gray was absent too, Dyche later saying this was due to a combination of factors that included his condition and the speculation over his future that has since continued to be a source of intrigue.
Those moves mean Dyche has a senior squad of 26 players, if 20-year-old Dobbin is considered as part of the first team setup after a promising pre-season. Four of those players are goalkeepers.
