Rota had previously apologized for recognizing 98\u002Dyear old Yaroslav Hunka as “a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero”.

“As a result, we invite the Speaker of the House to act in a responsible manner and to step down from his functions,” he said in a statement.Volodymyr Zelenskyy calls on Canada to use ‘powerful relationships’ to rally international support for Ukraine

During the weekend, Jewish groups publicly identified Hunka as having served in the First Ukrainian Division, also known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division or the SS 14th Waffen Division which was a voluntary unit that was under the command of the Nazis. In a statement made Sunday, Rota said he has “subsequently become aware of more information” which caused him to “regret” his decision and extended his “deepest apologies to Jewish communities in Canada and around the world.

Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer, himself a former Speaker, said he had “serious concerns” on the fact that Hunka had not been properly vetted, and wondered what kind of message this situation would send to Canada’s allies around the world. Government House leader Karina Gould, herself the descendant of Holocaust survivors, had some tough words for the Speaker but called on other parties to rise above partisanship.

Monday morning’s debate put Rota in the uncomfortable position of having to mediate a debate over his own conduct. Several times, he asked MPs to show some respect which caused them to heckle back at him.
