Speaker Kevin McCarthy is pressing forward with an impeachment inquiry into President Biden and rallying his House Republican Conference this week to back the probe, sources close to the speaker told The Washington Times.
Mr. McCarthy believes the inquiry to be the “logical next step” in finding out information regarding the president’s ties to his son’s foreign business dealings and whether he engaged in influence peddling and bribery schemes while serving as vice president in the Obama White House.
A closed-door session is set for Thursday so that House Republicans can get an update on the potential investigations. The meeting will be led by House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan of Ohio and House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer of Kentucky. Just last month, Mr. McCarthy hinted that an impeachment inquiry could be coming as soon as September and that what happens next will be determined by how the Bidens respond to various congressional probes that are already underway.
“If they provide us the documents there wouldn’t be a need for an impeachment inquiry,” Mr. McCarthy said on Fox Business. “But if they withhold the documents and fight like they have now to not provide to the American public what they deserve to know, we will move forward with impeachment inquiry when we come back into session.”
An inquiry is the first step in the impeachment process, where evidence is gathered against an individual. It does not guarantee that the House will draft articles or impeachment.
