Sister Stephanie Baliga is fast—and she’s a fundraising powerhouse.
But Sr. Baliga had a different calling. A broken foot derailed her sophomore track season, and it caused her to think about her priorities.
“I was very, very focused on running, to a point of unhealthiness, and very focused on academics and just general achievement,” she toldShe began getting more involved with the Catholic church on campus. “Very quickly that ended up flourishing into my calling to become a sister,” Sr. Baliga, 31, said.Mission of Our Lady of the Angels
on Chicago’s west side, what she calls one of the city’s most challenged neighborhoods. There, she’s involved in feeding the poor, helping with other social services, teaching, and fundraising. She also keeps an eye on maintenance and construction projects for the Mission’s outreach center.at the Chicago Marathon in 2011, and she’s run every marathon since. Her slowest was that first year, when she ran 3:43. Her fastest was in 2014 when she clocked 2:53:49.
