Cardinal High School will be allowed to perform “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee' after it previously was canceled by the Cardinal School District’s Board of Education on Jan. 25.
MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio — There likely is one word on the minds of Cardinal High School students who are performing this year’s spring musical, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”: R-E-L-I-E-F.
Smallwood said the board changed its mind because Music Theatre International, the publishing company for the play, said it was OK to make revisions to portions of the play that raised concerns,. Cardinal Superintendent Jack Cunningham had cited “vulgar” song lyrics as a reason for the decision to cancel the play last month.
The play also features two gay characters who are parents of a student, although school officials say this was not a factor in their decision to cancel the play.
