One affordable housing advocacy group says it’s prepared to sue if city won’t allow project to be fast-tracked.
Los Angeles City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, in a 2022 photo, asked the council’s PLUM Committee this week to deny a developer’s request to allow a proposed affordable housing project to go through a fast-tracked approval process.
On the other hand, affordable housing advocates argue these applications were submitted before the mayor revised her directive in June to specify project eligibility. One group said they’re prepared to sue the city if officials do not allow these projects to retain ED1 status. Todd Nelson, an attorney representing the developer, reminded committee members that both the committee and City Council had granted the developer’s appeal on the Sherman Oaks project. For that reason, he said, the Winnetka project should also be allowed to move forward under the ED1 program.Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, who represents Winnetka, disagreed.
But following this week’s PLUM committee meeting, Winnetka resident Judith Giglio said committee members were right to deny the developer’s appeal this time. Nearby residents say the property backs up to single-family residences, and that what the developer has proposed – a multi-story, 360-unit apartment building – would be out of character with the rest of the neighborhood.
At least two affordable housing advocacy groups submitted letters to the PLUM Committee, expressing support for the project.
