Sporting have now confirmed they have received communication from United that they intend to trigger his release clause, which means Amorim could be appointed imminently. The statement from Sporting read: "Manchester United has expressed an interest in hiring coach Ruben Amorim, with the board of directors of Sporting referring to the terms and conditions set out in the employment contract in force between the company and the coach.
Amorim is set to become the sixth permanent United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013 and will try to lead United to their first Premier League title since Ferguson's final season.
