Over the years, the club has grown to include almost everyone, and even others who don’t run in the Tri-Cities community who hear about the collection and want to contribute.
“This is more than just running,” Tristi Matzuka, a runner in the club with current streak of more than 450 days of finding coins, told. “It’s more about helping other people, serving the community, and that hit home with me. I grew up really poor and my neighbors would drop food on our front porch. When I heard about this, I knew it was something I wanted to belong to.”The collection has grown each year. When the weekend before Thanksgiving arrives, the bank allows them to use their coin counting machine free of charge. Once they get a total—this year it was aAt the event this weekend, the nearly 50 shoppers were joined by Aldi District Manager Justin Sheth. After hearing about the event, Sheth decided to get Aldi involved, presenting a check for $2,000 to the club. Though the check could not be cashed in time for this year’s total, the money is seen as an excellent start for the 2020 campaign.
“I post up at the front door and hand out the money in $20 bills,” Kamps said. “Some people don’t spend it all, so I collect the change and send them out again. Others overspend and I go over with what’s left. It’s chaos, but it all works out as I collect the receipts, and we go until the money runs out.”Kamps said the new collection for 2020 has already begun. He hopes to have another record year, and also potentially to grow this into a bigger, national nonprofit in the future.
