💐 'Although common to this area, I never tire of seeing their unique, trumpet-shaped cups that herald warm weather ahead.'
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Flowers that grow from bulbs, such as daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, and tulips, are a beloved sign of spring. Although most varieties of spring bulbs are not native to Northeast Ohio, their cheery colors and hardiness to our wild temperature swings have earned them a place in many local gardens.Daffodil Hill
The same cannot be said, alas, for tulips. When we first moved here five years ago, my mom sent me tulip bulbs as a housewarming gift, which I planted in various flower beds around the house. Some bulbs were eaten immediately by chipmunks. I eagerly awaited the blooms of the remaining tulips as their pale green leaves grew throughout the following spring, only to be heartbroken as, one by one, the foliage of each flower was eaten down to the ground by neighborhood deer.
Spring bulbs are planted outdoors in the fall, and they are also sold this time of year as a potted plant or as “forced” flower bulbs in water. Once the bloom of the indoor plant has faded, readers have asked me if the flowers can be forced to bloom again.
