Ella McKenzie was in her teens when she began caring for her family and now helps other young carers.
A 29-year-old unpaid carer who felt "lonely and isolated" while growing up said other young carers should be given more of a voice.
Helen Walker, the chief executive of Carers UK, a national charity, said: "As the value of care provided by unpaid carers continues to grow at an incredible rate, we need to ensure they get the recognition and help they deserve."There were 1,825 young carers living in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough when the last census took place in 2021.
"I still struggled with tutors who didn't quite get it, and were pulling me up because I was late or because my brain wasn't switched on all the time," she said. "I'm always like, 'Yep, I still care for my Mum', and they say, 'Oh do you?', and they really relate to you."Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council have introduced strategies to improve how they identify and support carers, including under-18s.
