Discover the historical bull running tradition of Stamford
Although bull running is more associated with Pamplona in Spain, it was also once popular in Stamford in Lincolnshire.
From then on, every November 13, on St Brice’s Day, Stamford hosted its annual bull run. Notably, St Brice’s Day has a dark history of its own, as King Aethelred ordered a mass killing of Danes on this day in 1002.On the day of the Stamford bull run, tradesmen would shut up shop and the animal would be released into the streets to be chased by men, women, and children.
It is claimed that once the bull was exhausted and could go no further, it would be dragged through the town to be tied up and baited before being killed at Bull Meadow.
