GAF Energy debuts new solar roof designed for the masses
or the past two years, Standard Industries’ GAF Energy has been working on a new solar roof that integrates solar technology into traditional roofing. Today, the three-year-old firm—sister company of the nation’s largest roofing manufacturer, GAF—is introducing the new solar roof that’s designed for the masses at the CES trade show in Las Vegas.
The new solar roof, called Timberline Solar, integrates a nailable solar shingle—the world’s first, according to the company—that will be assembled at GAF Energy’s facility in San Jose, California. GAF Energy worked with the Department of Energy’s Sandia National Laboratories in order to verify the product’s strength and durability before the launch.
Millstone, 44, and his co-CEO David Winter, 45, have been working on the top-secret design of this new roof at the San Jose R&D center, as we detailed in aThey have already sold more than 3,000 solar roofs with an earlier iteration called Decotech. As they told us last winter, they hope to eventually install millions of the new roofs, helped by a price point designed for the masses and an army of certified installers.
“In the immediate term, the goal we are shooting for is that every single person who sits down with a contractor and considers putting on a new roof will consider putting on a solar roof,” Millstone says. He and Winter figure that they can easily sell out the capacity of their existing California factory.
