The San Deigo Comic-Con 2023 panel revealed that as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Star Trek: The Animated Series' premiere, CBS Studios will be creating five animated promotional spots in the show's style, featuring the return of several beloved Star Trek characters voiced by their actors. These characters will include Will Riker , Quark , and Saru , demonstrating that CBS plans to draw on a wide variety of characters from across the Star Trek pantheon.
To create these shorts, CBS is partnering with Casper Kelly, no stranger to the Star Trek universe after his work on Star Trek: Short Treks. Outside of Star Trek, Kelly is known for his work on Adult Swim, particularly his viral short, Too Many Cooks. In 2023, Kelly will also be working in the Star Trek comic book world with IDW Publishing and was present at the 50th Star Trek Animated Celebration panel for the announcement.
Why Star Trek: The Animated Series Is Still Essential Although Star Trek: The Animated Series's canon status is questionable, its continued importance to the franchise cannot be understated. During its time on air, The Animated Series won an Emmy for Outstanding Entertainment – Children's Series and helped keep continued interest in Star Trek: TOS alive along with syndication.
Star Trek: The Animated Series may not be the most popular franchise project of all time, but its spiritual successors, particularly Star Trek: Lower Decks, have proved that it deserves acknowledgment even 50 years after its release. Lower Decks has become hugely popular with audiences, and before Star Trek: Prodigy's cancelation, the show continued what The Animated Series started in terms of being marketed to a younger audience.
