Star Trek #11 – written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, drawn by Angel Unzueta, colored by Marissa Louise and lettered by Clayton Cowles – features a heated exchange between Ro Laren and Ensign Sato, during which Laren criticizes Starfleet, accusing them of “indoctrination,” with the Kobayashi Maru an important part of molding new officers.
Ensign Sato's Defends The Kobayashi Maru's Classic Virtues Introduced in 1982’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the Kobayashi Maru is a test given to all cadets at Starfleet Academy, in order to ascertain what an officer would do in a no-win scenario. As seen in the movie, the test involves rescuing a stranded cruiser, named the Kobayashi Maru, which escalates into a conflict with a squad of Klingon warships. There is no way to actually beat the Kobayashi Maru – that is not the point.
Ro’s criticisms of the Kobayashi Maru in Star Trek #11 are no doubt colored by her own less than ideal Starfleet experience. After a rocky start to the beginning of her career, Ro finally thought she had found her groove on the Enterprise, but the allure of the Maquis' cause proved too strong, and she betrayed her friends in Starfleet. The subsequent years have made Ro bitter, and her dim view of Starfleet bleeds over into her opinion of the Kobayashi Maru.
Ro sees the Kobayashi Maru as barbaric, saying that not even the Klingons do anything like it. Ensign Sato counters Ro’s criticisms of the Kobayashi Maru, reaffirming its purpose as a test of character. Sato raises her own good points while defending the Kobayashi Maru test, but Ro’s criticisms are also not without merit. As seen in various shows and movies, the test can cause great psychological distress for cadets, or inspire them to cheat and do things they may not otherwise do.
