From the classic battle droids of the Clone Wars era to the more recent Dark Trooper droids featured in The Mandalorian.
Droids are currently the main focus in Star Wars canon within the ongoing crossover event Star Wars: Dark Droids, in which an ancient formless artificial intelligence called the Scourge is assimilating droids across the galaxy, creating a universe-conquering hivemind. While the Scourge is the ultimate villain of this story, another droid and their followers are arguably the main heroes.
Ajax Sigma Is Star Wars’ Ultimate Droid In Star Wars: Dark Droids #2 by Charles Soule, Luke Ross, and Alex Sinclair, Ajax Sigma and their droid followers of the Colony of the Second Revelation are preparing for war against the Scourge. In that effort, Ajax strips the external parts of his robotic body and replaces them with heavier armor and a helmet-like headpiece reminiscent of a Spartan warrior.
The fact that Ajax could upgrade his physical form as easily as a human changes clothes means that any droid can do the same. In fact, later in this very issue, one of Ajax’s followers named Gertee has their very mind removed from their original body and placed inside the droids’ ship, effectively turning Gertee into the very vessel these droids will use during their mission against the Scourge.
While Ajax Sigma is arguably the main protagonist of Dark Droids, there was a time when they were at war with the Jedi fighting for droid supremacy, which means they could launch a similar attack against organics when this conflict with the Scourge comes to its inevitable conclusion.
