The death of LukeSkywalker in TheLastJedi was controversial, to say the least. But a recent StarWars comic may have introduced the perfect way to bring Luke back in the future — and not as a Force ghost.
In a stunning decision, Star Wars just introduced a new canonical way for Luke Skywalker to appear in stories set after his death in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The loophole doesn't just apply to Luke, but to Jedi such as Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, and other heroes stretching back through time.
Mark Hamill's iconic portrayal of Luke Skywalker concluded in the character's death in The Last Jedi, with Luke becoming one with the Force. While the character will continue to appear in Star Wars media set prior to this event, there's a new way that Luke could influence future stories, as revealed in Marvel's Star Wars #20, from Charles Soule and Marco Castiello.
Luke Skywalker's imprint - a version of the hero from between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi - will now remain on Gazian for the rest of Star Wars history, or at least until the living vergence is destroyed. Given the variety of Jedi who have been drawn to the planet in the past, it seems near certain that future Jedi will visit, likely wishing to converse with a hero whose name will go on to become legend.
While Force ghosts have always given the franchise ways to bring characters back after their deaths, this can be damaging to the sense that their story is truly over, and is dictated by the detached cosmic wisdom of the dead Jedi themselves. In contrast, the young, headstrong Luke who exists on Gazian can be tracked down by any Force-sensitive who learns it's possible, allowing the most recognizable version of the character to weigh in on future events even centuries after The Last Jedi.
Few franchises benefit from making death meaningless, but Star Wars #20's Force vergence does something different, giving future creators access to the young Luke Skywalker under specific conditions that don't need to cheapen his death or overemphasize his influence on future events.
