Star Wars: The Acolyte has reportedly wrapped production, keeping it on target for a release in 2024.
The Acolyte has reportedly wrapped production, keeping the dark side Star Wars show on target for a 2024 release. Set in the waning days of the High Republic Era, the show follows a group of Jedi investigating a series of mysterious murders. Announced to be releasing in 2024 at Star Wars Celebration, The Acolyte's status was put in question when a number of Star Wars productions were put on hold due to the WGA writer's strike.
Bespin Bulletin reported that principal photography for The Acolyte has finished. Both first and second unit wrapped with the cast in the UK last month, following the schedule showrunner Leslye Headland established at Celebration in April. While smaller units remain active, the series is now headed for post-production.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Acolyte Will Release On-Schedule In 2024 With Andor season 2 shutting down and The Mandalorian season 4's production delayed due to the writer's strike, a similar fate was assumed for The Acolyte. How Headland was able to oversee the completion of filming is unknown, but the series won't have any issues with achieving its 2024 release slate now that post is in ILM's hands.
Post-production generally takes a year to complete following the conclusion of principal photography, but there's evidence that The Acolyte is ahead of the game. During a tell-all discussion at Celebration, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said she was "blown away" by the series' first four episodes. Though she wasn't specific, it's possible that visual effects for the series are already far along on half of the series.
Worst case, The Acolyte will be ready to go by this time next year. If a bulk of the shots have been finished for the first four episodes, then the dark side show could be coming as soon as February, taking several months out of the normal post timeframe. The Acolyte is still a way's out from being a priority for Star Wars fans, but it could lay the groundwork for the franchise's future on TV when it drops on Disney+ in 2024.
