Space broadband on weapons is not something Elon Musk condones
A Russian drone shot down over Ukraine appears to have been fitted with equipment made by Elon Musk's space broadband service Starlink, according to Ukrainian media.The Defence Express report claims the wreckage it depicts was shot down during a Wednesday incident during which Ukraine intercepted 28 of 32 drones sent by Russia.
Images of the downed drones apparently depict a model called the Geran-2 – a Russian-made copy of Iran's Shahed 136 drone. The propeller-powered drones, which have a range of around 2,500 kilometers, typically carry a 50kg warhead or surveillance equipment. If the item is indeed Starlink hardware, it should be possible to prove its origins – perhaps even where it was bought, and by whom.that claim Russian ground forces routinely use Starlink for internet access in the field. Democratic members of Congress have asked the US government to– and could have found a way to build Starlink-equipped kit that only becomes active once it crosses the border into Ukraine where SpaceX's service is allowed.
