In the one month since the requirement was removed, 1,217 people have applied at the State Police Academy. In the previous 6 months, there were a total of 1,745.

Of the 1,217 new applications, 524 were from applicants who hold a high school diploma or equivalency, State Police said. Those applicants would not have been eligible under the old policy, according to State Police. Cadet applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate and a valid driver’s license from any state. Applicants must be at least 20 years old at the time of application, and they must be at least 21 years old and cannot have reached age 40 upon entry into the training academy.
