Abortion access tends to be a testy topic among the disabled community for many reasons—not the least among them is that both sides of the argument tend to use disabled people like weapons against the other.

Anti-abortion advocates use disabled bodies as examples of botched abortions and abortion-rights advocates use disability as a reason why abortion is necessary in the first place. This can leave disabled people feeling as though no one is listening but would rather push them back and forth in an attempt to one-up their opponent.

It needs to be noted that abortion access cannot be seen as a prescriptive measure when it comes to the intersection of disability and pregnancy. There are many disabled people that want to be parents and able-bodied parents who want to carry a disabled child to term.
