With the start of the new school year just weeks away, families are preparing to send their kids back to school, stocking up onand new clothes. As families get ready, so do school district maintenance teams across North Texas.

Even with extreme temperatures this summer, many North Texas districts have stuck with normal protocols to prepare air conditioning units for the approaching school year. The bigger concern has been making sure crews working in the heat are safe.are expected to continue in the area for much of this week. Last month, the high reached at least 100 degrees on nine days, compared to the typical June total of two.

Many districts have modified work hours to have crews working early in the morning and in the evenings to avoid the heat of the day. They make sure crews have enough water, increase the number of breaks and limit how long crews can work on the roof.Preventive maintenance is done year-round; however, maintenance teams are able to perform more preventive maintenance measures during the summer months when the schools are mostly empty.

Over the summer, with fewer people in the schools, many districts turn units up or off in some areas to save energy and money. But, a couple of weeks before students and teachers return, maintenance teams start to run units the way they will be running during school.

“Now we may see that in the fall after the equipment has run so hard in the summer battling this heat,” Watson said. Some districts have portable air conditioning units if an HVAC system breaks once school is in session. Richardson ISD uses spot coolers. This summer, the district purchased 10 additional spot coolers, so it won’t have to rely on rentals if a unit breaks. Before this summer, the district only had six spot coolers.
