The 'stealth omicron' subvariant could be deadlier. But it likely won't cause another surge.

Experts aren’t panicking, but they are watching closely. BA.2 is considered more transmissible than omicron itself, which was already more transmissible than previous strains, officials say. The subvariant, according to Andy Slavitt, a former White House senior advisor in the Biden administration.

“And that’s really where the concern comes into play, especially as we are sort of trying to put the pandemic behind us and lifting some of the precautions or the preventive measures such as masking indoors.” “I think we’ll see an increase in cases,” she said, “but I don’t think we’re going to see a surge in the same way we saw a surge with omicron, where we were having cases in the ten thousands and above” each day in New Jersey.

“If that variant truly is significantly more infectious, then you should be alert and looking for signs of continued spread, and more importantly, acceleration of spread,” he said. While China is implementing new lockdowns as it grapples with a spike in cases, the relatively low efficacy of its vaccine — which does not use mRNA technology like the Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech shots — and low immunization rates in some of its regions might be playing a role in the spread, he said.
