"We have gone above and beyond what was requested by the very Republicans who said they supported broader reform as long as we got serious about enforcement," Obama said in the clip ."But even though we've answered these concerns, I gotta say I suspect there are still going to be some who are trying to move the goalposts on us one more time. Maybe they'll need a moat. Maybe they'll want alligators in the moat.
To this, Colbert quipped:"Remember back in 2011 when a president talking about alligator moats was a joke? And the most embarrassing thing about Kevin Spacey was [the movie], not Obama or Trump, who first mooted the idea of alligator-fortified border security. "[Obama] also plagiarized that joke from this guy I used to know who used to play a conservative pundit on a comedy show," said Colbert, segueing into clips from his old Comedy Central satire show,In the first clip, dated June 21, 2006, Colbert's right-wing alter-ego said:"We need a moat. We need it filled with fire, maybe with some fireproof crocodiles in there.
In a clip from an October 7, 2014, episode, Colbert said:"I say wall, moat filled with flames, fireproof alligators." And in a further clip from July 21, 2006, he said:"A moat with some alligators in it."Earlier in the segment, Colbert said"we have never had a crueler, more twisted man in the Oval Office," reacting to Trump allegedly suggesting border patrol agents shoot migrants in the legs to slow them down, perreport.
