E Street Band's legendary guitarist on 50 years of performing with the 'Born in the USA' singer and how - despite his dress sense - he actually hates being the centre of attentionOn a recent night on the E Street Band’s world tour, the band were some way into their 1984 hit “Dancing in the Dark” whensuddenly commanded them to stop. The air stilled. The players paused and waited. Before them, 60,000 faces lifted with fevered expectation.
“In the beginning, when we started, you were judged by your ability to copy records,” Van Zandt recalls. “I was very good at it. He wasn’t. So my band was probably bigger than his, locally. But I recognised something in him that was unique. Because he couldn’t copy so well, it turned out to be a good thing – it turned into his writing style. He wasn’t ever going to be an impersonator. He was just too original.
In those days, Van Zandt found he complemented Springsteen’s early introversion. “I’ve kind of always been a bit more of a street guy, more of an interactive guy with people, a bit more social, a bit more commercial, if you will.” But there was always common ground, too. “Similar work ethic,” he says. “Similar taste. Not entirely, but similar.”
What they have now is something Van Zandt describes as “a bizarre combination of spontaneity and precision”. He admits it is an odd juxtaposition. “And it’s really hard to explain, and really hard to know how exactly you got there.” He points out that there is no production involved in an E Street tour – no fancy lights, costume changes, moving stage parts or animated backdrops. “I think it says a lot about that personal relationship,” Van Zandt says. “Because there’s no distraction. He’s talking to you.”
