Stimulus checks for some mixed immigration status families is still a pending matter | Opinion
At the height of the pandemic, families received a stimulus check from the government under the CARES Act. However, some families of mixed immigration status were left behind and even when the CARES Act was amended, a group aged out of eligibility, writes Rosa Saavedra Vanacore.Last month, President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address focused on the substantial progress made to support working families nationwide.
Congress changed the law in December 2020, belatedly recognizing that it is unfair to exclude citizens in mixed immigration-status families. The revised law enabled Rueda and other families to receive the previously denied stimulus payments in 2021. These families have yet to be made whole even under the amended CARES Act. If the original act had not denied relief to U.S. citizens based on who they married, Rueda’s oldest child would have received the $500 payment.
So why are these families still waiting? Because the Biden administration continues to resist efforts to make things right.following a district court’s ruling
