But it’s been interesting to watch how Ella’s deadpan facial expression has been interpreted on social media as so many have branded her rude, a mean girl and even ‘scary’.
Well, I’m here to cape for Ella and her scowl as she simply has a case of the Resting Bitch Face and so do I. RBF is a facial expression where someone typically looks annoyed, bored or, you know, just isn’t smiling. For many of us with RBF, it’s not something we can help and, in fact, scientists have said it’s legit a real thing and is most commonly associated with women – women being judged by their looks, shocker!In 2015, a study conducted by scientists Abbe Macbeth and Jason Rogers from Noldus Information Technology found that women are more likely to be asked to ‘smile more’ compared to men.
‘So RBF isn’t necessarily something that occurs more in women, but we’re more attuned to notice it in women because women have more pressure on them to be happy and smiley and to get along with others,’ Macbeth said in the studyI’ve experienced it countless times in the past where I’ve been walking down the street and a random man who I don’t know has asked me to ‘smile’ which, I can assure you, only intensified my RBF.
