The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of the UK as Storm Ashley hits
Britain is bracing for the impact of Storm Ashley, with forecasters predicting strong winds and heavy rain to lash the country on Sunday. The storm has been closely monitored as it barrels across the Atlantic, with experts previously suggesting it could become the season's first named tempest.
Ireland's Met Eireann made it official on Friday morning, dubbing it Storm Ashley and issuing warnings of wind gusts that could reach a staggering 80mph, alongside the threat of flooding, particularly in coastal regions. The Met Office has responded by issuing a yellow warning effective from 3am on Sunday until 12pm on Monday, covering parts of north Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and north west England.
BBC Breakfast's weather expert Matt Taylor has cautioned that western coastal areas could face some particularly severe conditions. Storm Ashley is expected to intensify rapidly on Saturday evening, bringing with it the potential for destructive winds and serious flooding.
"As the day progresses, the winds will likely turn southwesterly, with especially strong winds possible during Sunday afternoon and evening in western Scotland. Here, gusts could potentially reach 70-80mph in exposed areas, and more generally 55-65mph in other parts of the warning area. These strong winds, combined with high spring tides, may cause some disruption."
"We expect to update and refine Sunday's wind warning as our confidence increases, and it's likely that more warnings for the expected rainfall will be issued. It's therefore crucial that people stay up to date with the latest forecast."
