From the interminable VTs to the phone line dancing, the BBC show needs to stop treating its audience like children
This is one of the signsis dumbing down. Another is the moment in the show when the voting lines open. Claudia Winkleman explains again how viewers can vote, and aided by props – think huge sunglasses, maracas, inflatable beach balls – the celebrities and professional dancers whoop and holler like chimpanzees watching a magic trick.
Even Tess Daly, who has presented the series since show number one, has started to talk to contestants as if she’s a nursery teacher. “Improving every week!” she beams over-enthusiastically, repeating exactly what a judge has just told a celebrity with the same sing-song praise usually reserved for a well-trained puppy.StrictlyAt this point I expect you’re either nodding along in agreement or cursing me as a killjoy.
