The 21-year-old has been a free agent since he left Leeds United in the summer.
The Spiders will sign the Scotland under-21 cap on a deal for the rest of the season. There had been strong English interest in McKinstry from Gillingham, Forest Green Rovers and Wrexham but his preference was to return north of the border.
Queen’s Park have been trying to land McKinstry all summer and their perseverance is about to pay off. He has been impressed with the style of play Robin Veldman has adopted and the facilities that Queen’s have now put in place and McKinstry is keen to get his career back on track. Leeds United paid £400,000 to sign him from Motherwell and he went on to play in the English Premier League with Leeds United.
The attacker had a loan spell back at Motherwell last season and was the club’s player of the month for October but he fell out of favour when Stuart Kettlewell came in and played with wingers.
