A new Indiana Department of Transportation study suggests several ways to reduce congestion and improve safety on the Borman Expressway, the stretch of Interstate 80/94 in Lake County.
A public meeting is expected this fall, the INDOT announcement said.
Only one of the proposals calls for adding some pavement to the Borman, where a multi-year INDOT project to expand the roadway to at least four lanes in each direction was completed about a decade ago. Other proposals in the “base package” of improvements include dynamic shoulder lanes, which would allow vehicles to use the highway’s shoulders when the road is congested; event management, to improve the response to accidents and breakdowns on the highway; and enhanced warning and interchange information signs.One of three alternative packages would add ramp metering, in which traffic signals on entrance ramps would limit the flow of traffic entering the expressway, to the base package.
