A new study found suppressing negative thoughts could improve mental health

A new study has found that suppressing negative thoughts could actually have a positive effect on mental health. Mind launched a survey of 12,000 people back in 2021 where around a third of adults and young people said their mental health has gotten much worse since March 2020, with 88 per cent of young people said loneliness made their mental health worse during the pandemic.

Researchers asked volunteers to block out negative thoughts, finding their mental health improved and the thoughts became less vivid. Working with Dr Zulkayda Mamat at the Medical Research Council cognition and brain sciences unit, the study assessed 120 people across 16 countries to test whether it might be possible - and could be a benefit - for people to practise suppressing their fearful thoughts.

Professor Anderson said: “The whole point of psychotherapy is to dredge up these thoughts so one can deal with them and rob them of their power.” During the study, participants provided a cue word for each scenario which reminded them of the scenario as well as a single-word detail.
