In lieu of a veil, the bride wore a cape with pearls draped along the edge for this romantic Copenhagen wedding.
“It’s rare you meet a complete stranger who turns out to be the companion to your soul,” muses Alexandra Carl, but that’s just what happened to the Danish stylist and fashion director of, who married the independent filmmaker Jacob John Harmer in the church where she was baptized .is the word that best describes the ceremony, planned by the couple, who didn’t want anything to feel “staged and controlled”—keeping with their love story, in other words.
Alexandra, who lives in London, met Jacob “on a sun-beaming pavement in London on August 6, years ago. I was sitting on the opposite pavement with a friend wearing these red leopard-print trousers,” she recalls, “and Jacob asked his friends who I was. We rekindled shortly after”—despite the filmmaker having no social media presence at that time—“and haven’t separated since that day.
With far-flung families and friends, it was important for the couple to pick a place where everyone could come together, so the couple settled on Alexandra’s childhood home in Copenhagen for the party and dinner; a place Alexandra describes it as being having “a different reality.” The aesthetics, she adds, felt “organic to the venue, full of light and wildflowers and greenery.
Following a photo session by the coast, the newlyweds returned to the reception in the garden that was filled with bluesy jazz music played by a five-piece band from Hastings, Jacob’s birthplace. Dinner, prepared by, was served in a tent lit by fairy lights and filled with flowers. Keeping with Scandinavian tradition, there were lots of toasts. Alexandra’s sister, who had performed a piece by Björk in the church, set the mood with “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman.
The couple kicked off the dancing by stepping out to Van Morrison’s “Sweet Thing,” and the band didn’t stop until 2:00 a.m.; that’s when a British friend stepped in, deejaying until first light. Life’s not all fun and no work for this busy couple, however, who delayed their honeymoon until after the close of Copenhagen Fashion Week. Then, they island-hopped around Greece, says Alexandra, “to Santorini, Milos, Folegandros, and Koufonisi, where we first fell in love.
