Promotion rivals watching Leeds United’s tight win at Middlesbrough would have felt rightly aggrieved on Monday night, in Michael Carrick’s eyes. At the top of the list would have been Kieran McKenna, who Carrick worked with and formed a strong relationship at Manchester United.
Carrick was generally pleased with how his side, playing for very little when it came to Monday’s game, handled the Whites. While there is little beyond pride that is damaged for Leeds in losing, it is clear how keenly Carrick was aware of Monday’s significance. “I enjoyed the game,” he said. “We did a lot of really, really good things in the game and pinned them back. They've got some good quality and they’ve shown that all season.
“We defended, largely, in shape really well. We were really good with the ball and dominated and controlled large parts of the game.
