"With the cost of everything nowadays," Dooley said,"we tried to throttle back and charge less with the mindset of we'll attract more campers and fill the gap that way."Children play with toys as part of a summer camp at Art Cellar on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 in Houston.About 1,600 kids will attend YMCA Houston's overnight summer camp that offers horseback riding, archery and other outdoor activities.

YMCA Houston, which has a 100-year history of offering camps, also secured more funds from grants and sponsors to offer more scholarships. Scholarships are offered on a need basis based on the parents' income and can cover from 10 percent to 100 percent of costs. Jessie Githens, a Realtor at The Githens Group and mother of four in The Woodlands, said she's definitely seen prices spike for a lot overnight camps.

She said the camps give her children an opportunity to see their friends and work on skills toward their individual interests. And she doesn't send them all to the same camp, instead she works with their interests from art to robotics to sports.
