The storm made landfall on Oct. 29, 2012, and caused record-setting storm surge that inundated the East Coast with water.
When Superstorm Sandy made landfall along the East Coast on Oct. 29, 2012, it had been downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm.
The day before the storm made landfall, Pennsylvania’s governor at the time, Tom Corbett, warned residents to be prepared for a historic storm. And Sandy was that - historic. Superstorm Sandy has been described as “several storms wrapped together.”As government officials prepared for the arrival of Sandy, states began declaring a state of emergency as early as Oct. 26 including New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. More states followed the next day – New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Rhode Island declared a state of emergency on Oct. 28.
‘We are looking at the highest storm surges ever recorded’ in the Northeast, said Jeff Masters, meteorology director for Weather Underground, a private forecasting service. ‘The energy of the storm surge is off the charts, basically.’”
