WASHINGTON—The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the widely used abortion pill mifepristone to remain on the market through Friday, while the justices continue to weigh whether to block a lower-court order that would limit access to the drug.

The extension came in a pair of brief orders issued by Justice Samuel Alito, who oversees emergency matters for the courts in Texas, where a lawsuit contesting the pill’s approval originated.
