This week, I am celebrating having had 24 extra years to be a quirky writer.
Twenty-four years as a cancer survivor. Quirk-wise, I used these years well, developing new affinities like appointing the crepe myrtle tree as overseer of the courtyard. For example, my lavender-blossomed buddy will notify me if the pale pink hibiscus is cheating and not closing up at night, making it a rival to the beauty of the night-blooming jasmine. Usually, I hold court on my front porch swing to get everyone back on track.
Not to be outdone, the backyard beckons with its own brand of possibility. The lemon tree, an ever-present reminder of my age, since it was a gift for my 50th birthday, has become a role model as we age gently together.
