Chaz Johnston, awakened early Wednesday by a television station weather alert, got up just in time to hear a tornado bearing down on his home on Cobb Lane in the Flatwood community, just north of Montgomery.The storm blew a storage shed that was behind Johnston’s home was across the road, where it sat in shreds with a sofa and other contents.“It could have been worse. It could always be worse. Just lucky to be alive,” Johnston said.
Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham said he did not know of any other serious injuries after door-to-door searches of the area. Cunningham urged people to stay away from the area, which was bustling with law enforcement, emergency crews, utility crews, and others working on securing the area and starting the cleanup.“Roads are still blocked. Still congested. We’ve still got power crews. We’ve got utility companies out here. We’ve still got first responders out here. So please. Hopefully, once when we get everything cleared up, we’ll be able to let you know it’s safe.
“We’re going to try to help them get all that up. If they can get it to the road, we’ll pick it up for them and dispose of it for them and take it and haul if off,” Singleton said.
