The Central Saint Martins graduate introduced her compelling glass beadwork to Milan Fashion Week.
What does it take to make it as a fashion designer today? One has to critically think about design innovation, be logical about sustainability and production, and have something interesting enough to say to differentiate her from the masses of photogenic labels out there. Oh, and there’s also having a product that actually sells. Susan Fang is well on her way, then; her nascent brand is in its third season, showing as a part of a group runway at Milan Fashion Week.
That siren sensibility was amplified by Fang’s bubble pieces. Introduced several seasons ago as accessories, Fang’s crystal glass beadwork was used here for everything from headpieces to shoes to tops to bags. The weighty beads hung at the hems of stretch tulle shirts and dresses, clanking and whirring as models walked, the sound meant to evoke the crash of waves on the shore.
More than just being flashy and cool, though, these glass products are environmentally minded. Fang and her mother, a retired artist, make each and every bag themselves, including the ones sold in stores. They’ve found ways to eliminate waste in their process by letting each item grow organically; they do not sketch out their patterns in advance, but freestyle until they’ve reached a happy final product.
