Police say the assailant in Monday’s shooting in a science building at the heart of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was taken into custody about 90 minutes after the gunfire was reported.
Law enforcement and first responders gather on South Street near the Bell Tower on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus in Chapel Hill, N.C., Monday, Aug. 28, 2023, after a report of an"armed and dangerous person" on campus.
“To actually have the suspect in custody gives us an opportunity to figure out the why and even the how, and also helps us to uncover a motive and really just why this happened today. Why today, why at all?” UNC Police Chief Brian James said. “And we want to learn from this incident and we will certainly work to do our best to ensure that this never happens again on the UNC campus.”
Jones declined to elaborate on the apprehension, but TV station WRAL reported it took place in a residential neighborhood near the campus.“This loss is devastating, and the shooting damages the trust and safety that we so often take for granted in our campus community,” Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said.
Students started listening to police scanners to try to get information about where the shooter was, Ulm said. The panic eventually subsided. And people were allowed to use the nearby restrooms. Still, he called it “surreal seeing the mass panic.” Police also had received calls around campus about other potential victims and gunshots that needed to be checked out, he said.James said it was unclear if the suspect knew the victim. He also said the weapon has not been found.

Police search for suspected shooter at University of North Carolina; students warned to stay insideAn apparent shooting has happened on the University of North Carolina’s flagship campus. The Chapel Hill school issued an alert around 1 p.m. Monday warning of an “armed, dangerous person on or near campus” and urging people to go inside and avoid windows. Authorities haven’t provided details of the alleged shooting, including whether anyone had been shot. But Gov. Roy Cooper posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he had spoken to the Orange County sheriff and the state’s public safety secretary and “pledged all state resources needed to capture the shooter and protect the UNC campus.” About 90 minutes after the school’s first alert went out, it warned on X that the “suspect” was still “at large.”
