Honeywell technology is pushing sustainable aviation fuel to the next level by turning carbon dioxide waste into a partial replacement for traditional jet fuel.

Flying commercial airliners on old grease and fat to replace a sliver of the emissions-heavy jet fuel that moves people around the world was an early step to help aviation do its part in combating climate change. Now, new technology announced Wednesday is pushing sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, to the next level by turning carbon dioxide waste into its own version of SAF.

Honeywell announced its inaugural partner in mass producing the efuel, HIF Global, which has newly created a U.S.-based facility to produce eSAF. eFuels, also known as electrofuels, are a class of synthetic fuels that can replace conventionally drilled and produced fossil fuels CL00 . As the companies explained, eFuels combine green hydrogen and CO2 to produce eMethanol, which can then be converted to a wide range of sustainable fuels, including eSAF, eGasoline, and eDiesel.

Honeywell UOP eFining can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 88% compared to conventional jet fuel, the company claims. CEO of Honeywell Performance Materials and Technologies. “The ability to use readily abundant CO2 to produce SAF is a transformational opportunity for this market.”
