When you’re comfortable in a defensive system and have a better grasp of it, you start seeing things differently. You work through things via repetition. That repetition in 2021 set me up for an even bigger 2022. We had a great coaching staff with [defensive coordinator] Ryan Walters, [defensive backs coach] Aaron Henry, [defensive line coach] Terrance Jamison, [linebackers coach] Andy Buh, and [associate head coach] Kevin Kane.
When I saw the ball come my way, I saw every target as an opportunity to make a play on the ball. It’s as simple as that. But I don’t think many people thought I was 4.4 fast. I’ve been doubted my entire life. I was doubted at Illinois. It doesn’t really bother me anymore. I wasn’t trying to prove anything to anybody. I just wanted to enjoy the experience in Indianapolis. I came out on top.
JM: There’s a lot of interest in you and it’s easy to see why. When we turn the tape on, we see a safety that loves rallying toward the football. It’s funny you said that earlier because I already had this question written down. How did you develop that mentality? JM: I’ll put you in a scenario then, and I love putting safeties in this scenario. Say it’s 3rd-and-10 with the game on the line. Would you prefer to be manned up on the opposing team’s best receiver, or playing zone coverage with a chance to make a play on something near the sticks?
JM: There’s a good chance you guys are going to get broken up for the first time throughout your football careers.
