That meant many of the most important cultural centers were placed atop barbers, diners and other storefronts. Tin How Temple, the oldest surviving Taoist temple in San Francisco is one such example, nestled into busy Waverly Place.
To pay your respects to the Chinese sea goddess Mazu, which the temple is dedicated to, go up three flights of stairs, where you're likely to be greeted by calming incense.
