Jerick was a fine player. He’d play one season at Blinn Junior College, then transfer to Incarnate Word. Jalen was the star. He had a quick mind and enviable instinct. Counter remembers rewatching game tape and often seeing Jalen take a step toward the direction of the play before the ball was even snapped.
It’s a controversy that still somewhat roils Q. Silva, Pitre’s position coach at the time. Silva still keeps a film copy of the play handy, and he’ll still argue Pitre’s hit was as clean as a blow Pitre unleashed against Oklahoma on a similar play in 2020. But Pitre was ejected, and, although Stafford was winning at halftime, Carthage stormed back to win 27-26 on its way to a state championship.
Pitre’s instincts are what endeared him to Baylor coach Dave Aranda, who spent four seasons as defensive coordinator at LSU and crafted hybrid roles for future NFL safeties Jamal Adams and Grant Delpit .
