Long gone are the “what if” and “what now.” These days, Tatiana Suarez has a lot more “hell yeah” in her vocabulary.
The climb, no matter how long and steep, is what pushes the 32-year-old Suarez . With those, however, come precipitous drops. Just when Suarez was nearing the peak after four dominant wins – including a punishing TKO of former strawweight champion Carla Esparza in 2018 and tapping out current flyweight champion Alexa Grasso in 2019 – disc issues and bone spurs in her neck sent her tumbling down for two years.
“It felt amazing. Just because I was able to finally perform,” said Suarez, who took the fight at 125 pounds with plans to return to her original weight class. “I felt so calm and free. And I didn’t feel really … it was just so crazy, because I felt no pressure.” “I’m super excited. I mean, I think it’s gonna be amazing,” Suarez said. “It’s gonna be about me and obviously the rise of women’s wrestling and when I’m going to high school and just overall the highest, you know, in women’s wrestling in general.
“It’s been really cool,” she said. “And not to mention, we’re both healthy and I’m fighting soon and he should be fighting within a couple of months. So it’s just great.”
