The skipper wasn't allowed the chance to be the hero as anger boiled over at the national stadium.
Gutted James Tavernier was hooked by Rangers boss Philippe Clement with their semi final vs Motherwell in the balance on a day of personal torment for the suffering skipper.
The Ibrox captain – who insisted this week he has had a good season despite concerns over his performances from punters and pundits – had his number called in the 67th minute as he and Cyriel Dessers trudged off before his side would go onto down Motherwell 2-1. Tavernier had already set tongues wagging at Hampden after his lively exchange with Jack Butland.
The two were caught on TV letting off steam with Rangers trailing, as observers inside the national stadium watched the captain and one of the club's most senior players have a go at each other with boos raining down from angry Rangers fans. The Light Blues faithful were placated by a better second half. But Tavernier's display and subsequent substitution wasn't missed by Michael Stewart.
And it was echoed by Stephen Thompson on BBC, who stated: "Tavernier has not had a good afternoon, he's really struggled today. That miss compounding the misery."
