The system of auditing local council finances in England is “close to breaking point” with more than £100bn of taxpayers’ money being spent by local authorities with inadequate scrutiny

Just over one in 10 of authorities were fully audited in time to publish accounts for 2021-22 within already extended reporting deadlines. More than 400 local government bodies missed this deadline.

But the PAC says it is alarmed at how bad the situation has been allowed to become, and the causes of delays are not new. The audit failures are leaving local council taxpayers and elected councillors in the dark on risks to taxpayers’ money in their local area. “The Government must get its hands round this problem as a matter of urgency. It’s local taxpayers and service users who lose out when serious financial issues arise. The lack of timely accounts leaves council tax payers in the dark.”
